The other day I realized that I had to explain to someone the basics of everything with the game, even though it's listed in the FAQ, and that there's a tutorial house in Baron. So I was thinking, would it be better to start brand new players off on a Tutorial area? Like a separate room, or island. This would force players to actually learn the basics of the game, such as a fight, or a boss. Learning how to use the keys, learning what all the "says" means, and their verbs, etc. I just think it would be better to have new players start out in a tutorial style area so they don't come on the game and spend 15+ minutes asking how to move. Now, since we wouldn't really want all the old players to start on that island every time they made a toon, again I don't know byond's coding, would it be possible to have it so that if byond detects a save file then any new toons will be placed right into Baron? It's just a thought.

I know I have seen quite a few beginners confused about the says recently at least, something for at least that would be nice. I know in the last couple days alone I've seen it have to be explained to a number of people, sometimes several times to the same person even to the point of annoyience to the GMs and other players. I know it's in the FAQs already but they obviously don't ever read it or something.

That would be a pretty good idea.

And maybe you could disable w-say for them until they're able to exit that island, too. It should be so simple that they don't need to ask for help there, but it should still explain everything that they need to know.

That's not a bad idea. Granted staff members should be available in case something is wrong. But yeah - the wsay could be overwhelming at first.

does that mean every time we make a new character, we MUST do the tutorial? Or is it a one-time place?

Generally a one time deal, have it based per key. So if you use more than one key, yeah you would probably have to do it again.

I've been contemplating how something like this could work for awhile, as well. The problem is how to implement it that the whole key is exempt from the Tutorial. After all, I've got every ++ character currently unlocked and I still get the "Don't forget to read the FAQ" message every time I make a new character, after all. I thought it might be tricky to set up so once = whole account. As for this, I have a few ideas:

1) The tutorial IS every time, but you benefit from it. Such as having an AI partner who chops through groups easily to help powelevel to 5-10, or perhaps a slew of items given to you. Something to make the tutorial actually worth playing every time, you know? I've seen multiple MMOs with mandatory tutorial areas, but the rewards for doing everything there compared to running straight to the end are always worth it.

For example, Nexon might be a horrible company, but the tutorial island in MapleStory, if it's still the same as all those years ago, has some nice rewards. Low level quests to hit level 10 easily, a new weapon, new headgear, and a chair (recover 50 HP every 10 seconds as opposed to 10) as well as potions. If you started off on Victoria Island instead of Maple Island, you'd be hard pressed to even survive.

2) A verb to enable/disable the tutorial can be given to everyone who clears it once. I know that verbs like mod powers are account-wide, even affecting new characters, so this way you could choose to do it when you're bored but you can usually disable it. The problem here is how to aqquire said verb. The only one I know we can actively earl is vaccine, which is limited to one character. Is making an account-wide toggle even possible?

3) Two words. "Slot one." Though not everyone does, most players start with slot one as their first character. Thus we could make it so the tutorial only applies to slot one, somehow. They'll need to do it again if they delete and restart slot one, sure, but chances are, that's a few ++ classes away.

I know I have more ideas but I have this bad habit of suggesting too much at once.
