| Too many time I'll log onto Final Fantasy Legacy to see a full arguement going on. When I watch I see it gets out of hand and of course as a player I have the right to request it be moved to a chatbox, correct?
Example A:
USER1: FF8 sucked so bad I hated it USER2: FF7 was the best lol USER3: I really can't stand them *insert the whole server lashing at eachothers throats* Me: Can you guys maybe take it to a chatbox? USERS 1,2,& 3: BACKSEAT MOD!
In that scenario I was called a backseat mod for asking it to go to a chatbox. Which is an incorrect accusation. Because the real definition of 'Backseat Moderating' is
'Backseat Modding' can refer negatively to the behavior of ordinary users who take a moderator-like tone in criticizing other members
I didn't take a moderator like tone while asking them to go to the box. I simply just said go to the box. This is a form of what ISN'T backseat modding
Example B:
USER1: FF8 sucked so bad I hated it USER2: FF7 was the best lol USER3: I really can't stand them *insert the whole server lashing at eachothers throats* Me: Guys stop it right now. You're being stupid and I can get you muted for this.
This is where the term 'Backseat Mod' would come in handy. Because NOW I actually took authority over the users and the discussion.
Things you as a player can do to prevent yourself from backseat modding:
1) Don't be stiff man, Its a game. If someones breaking a rule don't take the authority, just kick back and watch what happens to them.
2) Contact a staff member, You'll get in less trouble this way. And you're helping the community! Yay for that fuzzy feeling inside you!
3) Ignore the annoyance. Don't give into whoevers bugging you. FFL has an ignore button so you know what? Use it!
4) Ask yourself before saying something. Ask yourself, "Would a moderator or any staff say this?" If yes, DON'T SAY IT! It could result in Backseat Moditus.
Ways to prevent calling someone a backseat mod when they aren't:
1) Are they taking authority? Is the player saying something a mod normally says during trouble?
2) Are they threatening to use power? Is the player saying he can Mute/Kick/Ban/Jail you or someone else?
3) Do they criticize other players with a mod like tone? Is the player talking to another player like he's above them?
Thanks for taking the time to read this! I hope now you all know what is and what isn't a backseat mod!
Note: This post wasn't made for the purpose to slam anyone at all. I just want people to know what the real definition of Backseat Moderating is so that people will stop using it as a fallback option and start using it correctly. Nobody should be able to backseat mod or take control except for the staff themselves.
Thank you for your time, Ducky
